Tillie (Sampson) Washburn

Matilda “Tillie”  Washburn, 84, of Saint Marys, died 1:35 P.M. Friday, July 28, 2023, at Lima Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 8, 1939, in Saint Marys, the daughter of James and Mathilda (Hiebert) Sampson.

She married James Washburn on August 23, 1958, and he preceded her in death on April 23, 2010.

She is survived by her children: Tim Washburn of Spencerville;  Curtis Washburn of Saint Marys; Tammy (Larry) Greber of New Bremen; Susan (Chris) Cruise of Saint Marys; Sandy (Ed) Whitman of Saint Marys. She is also survived by her 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She is survived by her brother, Albert Sampson of Columbus; her sister-in-law, Doris Freewalt of Mendon; her brother-in-law, Don (Helen) Washburn of Saint Marys.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a grandson, Andrew Crusie; her siblings: Jim Sampson; George Sampson; Bernie Sampson; Merle Sampson; Shirley Davis; Thelma Houser; Jean Young; by her daughter-in-law, Lou Ann Washburn.

Tillie was a graduate of Saint Marys Memorial High School. She had worked at the lunch counter at the former Neely’s Drug Store in Saint Marys for many years and, later, Rite-Aid Pharmacy. She also did babysitting in her home, and she had coached the Eagles’ Lodge 767 girl’s softball team, the “Bluejays”. She loved playing cards, especially euchre, with her family and friends. Tillie will be remembered for her fun, outgoing personality.

Funeral rites will be held 12:00 noon Saturday, August 5, 2023, at the Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, Saint Marys. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery, Saint Marys.

Friends may call from 10:00 A.M. until noon on Saturday at the funeral home, where memorial gifts may be given to Tillie’s family.
