Elsie Smith,92, of St. Marys, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 6th, 2024, at 11:50 PM at Vancrest of St. Marys.
Elsie was born on February 25, 1932, in Franklin, Indiana, to George and Gypsie (Compton) Hall. Shortly after, her family moved to the Martin, Kentucky, area. On September 24, 1952, she married Donald Smith, her high school best friend. Donald and Elsie moved to St. Marys, Ohio, in 1955.
Elsie was a homemaker and a retired teacher’s aide from the St. Marys school system, for whom she loved working with elementary school children. She was also a member of the former Hillsdale Baptist church. Following her husband’s footsteps, she performed numerous acts of charity for the congregation.
Elsie is survived by three sons: Dwayne (Susan) Smith of St. Marys, Ohio, Derrick (Lisa) Smith of Vandalia, Ohio, and Mark (Tami) Smith of St. Marys, Ohio. She also has four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one sister, Ada Moran of St. Marys, Ohio, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brother Vernon (June) Hall, Garent (Joy) Hall, Robert (Pete) Hall, and sister Edith (Graden) Daniels.
Elsie was a huge baseball fan and enjoyed watching her sons play Little League and the Cincinnati Reds. Her other hobbies included gardening, making afghans and beautiful quilts, and playing a closet attorney while watching CNN. She was a tenacious board game player and enjoyed beating her sons. Chinese checkers were her favorite. Friends and neighbors enjoyed her famous Christmas candy trays.
Rites are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. on March 13, 2024, at Miller’s Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, St. Marys, Ohio. Following the service, burial will be at the Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.
Visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 3-13-2024, at the funeral home.
