David Shreiner Obituary

David Edward Shreiner, 77, of Millersburg passed away Sunday, February 2, 2025 at Danbury Senior Living of Millersburg after a period of declining health.

He was born in Akron, OH on March 9, 1947 to the late Virgil E. and Ruth A. (Ott) Shreiner. At the age of one, his family moved from Wadsworth to Killbuck. They eventually moved to Millersburg while he was attending high school. He was in the first graduating class at West Holmes High School, class of 1965.

David went on to The Ohio State University and graduated in 1969 with a BS in Dairy Science from the College of Agriculture. While at university he took journalism classes and held the positions of wire editor, city editor, and Sidetracks column writer on the college newspaper, The Lantern. He also worked on the publication The Ag Student. He was also a member of the Scarlet and Gray pep band.

On July 25, 1970 he married Donna Louise Craft at the First United Methodist Church in Ada, Oh, and she survives.

Throughout his working career, David operated Shreiner Farms, a Holstein dairy farm from 1969-1997. In the 1980’s David became a salesman for his family business Shreiner Sole Company in Killbuck, OH. He was instrumental in his family starting a second business in 1985: Shreiner Creasing Matrix. He retired as President of both businesses in 2019. He traveled the USA and Canada on business, plus many trips to Italy, England, and Germany to visit business vendors, and to attend trade shows. Several trips in the 70’s and 80’s to Europe were on the supersonic turbojet, Concorde.

Some of David’s hobbies were reading biographies and history books. Watching and riding trains. Traveling the world; he had been to all 50 states and completed several world voyages on cruise ships visiting all 7 continents. His favorite cruise line was Cunard, and favorite ship was Queen Mary 2. David had also crossed the Atlantic twice on container ships. He loved cars, and had owned many unusual ones, including a Ford Pantera, a Cosworth Vega, and a Citroen SM. His 1983 Mercedes was featured in USA Today in 1992; having over 800,000 miles. Driving was his passion. His favorite sports team was The Ohio State Buckeyes, and he attended Buckeye home games for over 50 years and also attended some away games over the years.

He enjoyed riding his bicycle on Holmes County’s Rails to Trails and the Kokosing Gap Trail in Knox County. David will be remembered for his ready smile, his passion for driving, and his love for passenger trains.

He was a member of the Millersburg Methodist Community Church, member of All Aboard Ohio; serving as treasurer for four years, a member of the Rail Passenger Association, Lifetime member of The Ohio State University Alumni Association, and member of The President’s Club. At Ohio State, he and his wife, Donna, established an Endowment Fund for Family and Consumer Sciences Education Scholarship. They also established a scholarship through the Holmes County Education and Community Foundation.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Beverly Giannone of Alexandria, LA, numerous nieces and nephews; and a long-time friend, Brenda Feikert of Berlin, OH.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil E. Shreiner and Ruth A. Shreiner.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 8th from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg. Funeral services will begin at 1:00pm with Pastor Paula Koch officiating. Burial and committal services will be 12:00pm noon on Tuesday, Feb 11th at Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys, OH. We ask that you please line up for procession to the cemetery at Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Rd., St Marys, OH 45885. The procession will leave at 11:45am.
