Elois Dorthea Wierwille, 89, formerly of 725 Armstrong Street in St.Marys, OH died 4:39 p.m. Sunday February 14, 2010 at Westminster-Thurber Retirement Community in Columbus, OH.

She was born July 25, 1920 in New Bremen, OH to Alvin and Emma (Barnhart) Dicke.

On August 30, 1941 in New Bremen, OH, she married Woodrow “Woody” W. Wierwille, who died March 23, 1982.

She is survived by:

  • daughter, Diane E. DeLong of Louisville, KY
  • daughter, Carol J. Wierwille of Columbus, OH
  • daughter-in-law, Cheryl Wierwille of Encinitas, CA
  • sister, Evelyn “Pat“ (Rolla) Werts of St.Marys, OH
  • many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends

She was preceded in death by: parents, husband, son Wes Wierwille, sister Louise Wierwille, sister Mary Alice Kuhn Wittis, brother Donald Dicke

She was a 1938 Graduate of New Bremen High School.

She retired as an instructional aide from the East Elementary School. Prior to that, assisted her husband in operation of the former Anderson & Haney Builders’ Supply Co. in St.Marys. She also volunteered countless hours at the JTDM Hospital and for the western Auglaize Co. chapter of American Red Cross, specifically to assist military families.

She was a member of the St.Paul’s United Church of Christ, Hawthorne Chapter # 119 Order of Eastern Stars (past deputy grand matron) and American Legion Post # 323 auxiliary, Lienen-St.Marys Sister Cities group, New Knoxville Historical Society, St.Marys Crochet club, “Challengers” Home extension club, and Auglaize Co. Board of Elections for more than fifty years. She also served on boards of directors for Agape Ministries, St.Marys Day Care Center, and St.Marys Recreation Board.

Her husband “Woody” served as mayor of St.Marys, and following in his political footsteps, was elected to serve three terms as councilwoman-at-large for St.Marys.

She was proud to have been selected as “Woman of the Year” by the St.Marys Soroptomists in 1985.

A true “servant of the people,” she was fulfilled by her time dedicated to the various activities within the community. Time “on the road” was fun for her, having made journeys Germany, France, the Holy Land, Hawaii and numerous trips to the state of California.

Elois moved from St.Marys to Columbus in 2002, where lived out the remainder of her life at the Westminster - Thurber Retirement Community. While there, she took special interest in the arts, making many keepsakes for her family and friends.

Rites are scheduled 1:00 p.m. Thursday February 18, 2010 at Miller - Long & Folk Funeral Home 314 W. High Street in St.Marys, with the Rev. Dr. Ed Bray, officiating. Burial will follow at the Pilger Ruhe Cemetery, near New Knoxville, OH.

Visitation for family and friends will be held after 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home on High Street.
