Charles E. Wellman, 80, of 214 W. Spring Street in New Knoxville, OH died 8:30 a.m. Wednesday March 14 at the Wapak Manor Nursing Home.

 

He was born April 4, 1926 in Carter Creek -- Auglaize Co., OH to Edward & Leona (Dammeyer) Wellman.

 

On October 13, 1951, he married Marian F. Rain, who survives.

 

He is also survived by:

· Daughter, Kendra (Jeff) Opperman of St.Marys, OH

· Son, Kent (Betty) Wellman of Wapakoneta, OH

· Daughter, Keri (John) Koepke of Hilliard, OH

· Four grandchildren: Ryan & Jill Opperman; Katie & Kyle Koepke

· Brother, Mack (Vernita) Wellman of New Bremen, OH

· Sister, Mary (Merle) Sampson of Swanton, OH

· Sister, Carol (Richard) Deniston of Westerville, OH

 

He was preceded in death by: parents, 2 grandsons: Benjamin & Johnny

Roediger.

 

He was a 1944 graduate of New Bremen High School, and a graduate of the Lima Business School.  He was a veteran of the US Army, having served in the 144th Armored Division during World War II.  He retired from the United States Postal Service, having served as postmaster of the New Knoxville Post Office for 28 years. He had also worked for the Auglaize Co. Farm Bureau and the New Knoxville Supply Co.

 

He was a member of the First United Church of Christ, where he was a deacon and past Sunday School superintendent. He was a life member of both the New Knoxville Historical Society and the American Legion Post # 444, where he served as financial secretary. Also, he held memberships in the National Assoc. of Postmasters of the United States and Disabled American Veterans.

 

Mr. Wellman served as secretary for the Washington Twp. Trustees and was a board member of the Auglaize Co. Veterans’ Service Commission.

 

During his lifetime, he had donated more than 40 gallons of his blood to the American Red Cross.

 

He enjoyed refinishing furniture and doing all types of paperwork.

 

Services for Mr. Wellman are scheduled 4:00 p.m. Sunday March 18, 2007 at the First United Church of Christ in New Knoxville, with the Very Rev. Dr. David Williams, officiating. Burial, with graveside military rites, will follow at the Pilger Ruhe Cemetery in New Knoxville.

Visitation will be held 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Sunday at the church.

 

Memorial contributions may be directed to either the First UCC Radio Broadcast Fund or the New Knoxville Historical Society.

 

Arrangements are under the direction of the Vornholt - Miller Funeral Home in New Knoxville.
