Virgil H. Stienecker, 89, of 1300 Circle Drive, Saint Marys, Ohio, died 6:55 A.M. Sunday, December 11, 2011, at Otterbein Retirement Community in Saint Marys.
He was born September 21, 1922, in rural Saint Marys, the son of Leander and Lanora (Dohse) Stienecker.
He married Marjorie Schmehl on August 29, 1948, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Saint Marys and she survives at Otterbein Saint Marys Retirement Commnunity.
He is also survived by two daughters: Kate (Ned) Lawler of Saint Marys; Noreen
Stienecker of Saint Marys; by a grandson, Jason Stienecker; by two
great-grandsons: Jason Stienecker II; Nathaniel Stienecker; a
great-granddaughter, Lana Stienecker.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Wilda Stienecker and
Betty Murr; by a son, Ron Stienecker, who died July 12, 2011.
Virgil was a 1940 graduate of Saint Marys Memorial High School. He was a
veteran of the United States Army, having served his country during WWII,
including fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He retired after 35 years of
service from Mersman Furniture Company in Celina. He was an avid outdoorsman
who loved to hunt and fish. He was noted for his knowledge of the best places
to fish during the different seasons of the year. He was also an active Boy
Scout leader in Saint Marys and he was a life member of both American Legion
Post 323 and VFW Post 9289 in Saint Marys. He will be missed by the family
that he loved. He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he had
served on the church council.
Funeral rites will be held 12:00 noon Thursday, December 15, 2011, at the Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home, 314 West High Street, Saint Marys, the Reverend Bill Maki, officiant.
Friends may call from 10:30 A.M. until the time of services on Thursday at the funeral home, where memorial donations may be directed to either Zion Lutheran Church or Otterbein Saint Marys Retirement Community.
