Arlie V. Sommer, 92, of 1423 White Oak Drive, Saint Marys, died 5:02 P.M. Friday, June 6, 2008, at St.Rita's Medical Center, Lima, Ohio.
He was born June 24, 1915, near Portland, Indiana, the son of Charles and Ella (Theurer) Sommer.
He married Margaret Wickersham on June 6, 1937 and she survives at the residence. Arlie died on their 71st wedding anniversary.
He is also survived by a daughter, Betty (Allan) Woodmansee of Fort Wayne, Indiana; two grandchildren: Richard (Sarah) Woodmansee of Fishers, Indiana; Susan (Brian Judd) Woodmansee of Newburyport, Massachusetts; numerous nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Grace Sommer of Cincinnati.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers: Howard, Earl, Clarence, Alva and Ivan Sommer.
Arlie had resided in St.Marys since 1946 and was the manager of the Morris Variety Store and later owned Sommer Variety Store. Prior to retiring in 1983 he was employed by U. S. Refining Company.
He was a 1933 graduate of Madison Twp. High School in Portland, Indiana and he recently attended his 70th class reunion there.
He was a member of the Wayne Street United Methodist Church in Saint Marys, where he had served as at Trustee and on the administrative board. He was a charter member of the Homemakers Class at the church.
He was a member of the Saint Marys Rotary Club for 62 years and was past president. He received Rotary’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. He was also given the Paul Harris Fellow award in 2006 for his 60 years of service in Rotary.
Funeral rites will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at the Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, Saint Marys, Ohio, the Reverend Mary Kay Brown, officiant. Burial will follow in the family plot at Fountain Park Cemetery, Winchester, Indiana.
Friends may call from 4-8 Tuesday at the Miller Funeral Home, and also one hour prior to services on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wayne Street United Methodist Church Building Fund.
