Darell Spencer Smith,87, of 1901 Winston Drive, Saint Marys, died 4:57 P.M. Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at Lima Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness.
He was born October 25, 1921, in Seward, Nebraska, the son of Herbert and Eva (O’Dell) Smith.
On November 13, 1944, in San Francisco, he married Jean Louise Beale, and she survives at the residence.
He is also survived by his two sons: Steven (Nancy) Smith of Springfield, Ohio; Thomas (Judy) Smith of Celina; by three grandchildren: Laura (John) Whitmarsh of San Diego, California; Tami Byrum of Springfield, Ohio; Jason (Becca) Smith of Springfield, Ohio; by five great-grandchildren; by one brother, Howard (Betty) Smith of Anchorage, Alaska.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by one brother, Arthur Smith; by three sisters: Esther Radford; Beryl Brown and Doris Peterson.
Darell was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during WWII; he served on the SS Shenandoah; SS Alexander Wilson and the SS Cape Grieg.
He attended the Central Bible Institute in Springfield, Missouri. He retired from Potbury Ford in Saint Marys, where he was a salesman. He was a member of Living Hope Assembly of God Church in Saint Marys. He enjoyed amateur radio and had the call letters WZ8I.
Funeral rites were held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 27, 2009, at the Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, Saint Marys, Pastor Randy McKinney, officiant. Burial followed at Salem Cemetery near Monticello
