Harland Eugene “Gene” Roby, 83, of 16860 Glynnwood - New Knoxville Road in Wapakoneta, OH died 3:50 p.m. Wednesday May 12, 2010 at his residence.

He was born January 10, 1927 in St. Marys, OH to John Clarence and Ethel Armenda (Bay) Roby.

On October 1950, he married Catherine “Katie” Lawler, who died April 29, 1990.

Survivors include:

  • son Robert E. (Vickie) Roby of Wapakoneta, OH
  • daughter Christina L. Roby of St. Marys, OH
  • daughter Mary C. (David) Thornsberry of St. Marys, OH
  • 4 grandchildren: Matt Roby, Kelly (Dane) Roby-Gross, Rachel . Thornsberry, Colin Thornsberry
  • 1 great-granddaughter Kathryn “Katie” Elizabeth Gross

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; 3 brothers: Robert Roby, John Roby, Clinton Roby;4 sisters: Mildred Yocum, Cleona Rempfer, Hazel Hood, Mae Hinshaw.

At the age of seventeen, he enlisted in the US Navy, having served on the USS Columbus from 1944-1946.

He received his GED in 1969 and later attended Wright State University.

He was a retired production employee with the former Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in St.Marys. He also owned and operated Kanine Kennels at his home for many years.

He was a member of St.Patrick’s Catholic Church in Glynnwood, Eagles Lodge Aerie # 691 in Wapakoneta and was a founding member of the Auglaize Co. Men’s Garden Club.

His interests included attending his church, visiting with his family, dancing, eating apple fritters and anything made from chocolate, spending time with his friends, hunting and absolutely everything having to do with being outdoors.

A con-celebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday May 18, 2010 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Glynnwood, with The Rev. Oscar Seger and The Rev. Rick Neiberding, officiating. Burial, with graveside military rites, will follow at the St. Thomas Cemetery, in Glynnwood.

Visitation for family and friends will be held 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. Monday at Miller Funeral Home & Cremation Service 1605 Celina Road (Ohio 703 West) in St. Marys.
