Martin E. Menchhofer, 91, of 706 Magnolia Drive, Saint Marys, and formerly of Mercer County, Ohio, died Thursday, December 29, 2011, at the Saint Marys Living Center.

He was born March 15, 1920, in Mercer County, Ohio, the son of John and Kathryn (Powell) Menchhofer.

He married Margaret  “Marge” L. Hay on April 12, 1942 and she survives at the Saint Marys Living Center.

He is survived by his three children: Larry (Vera) Menchhofer of South Bloomingville, Ohio; Sherry (and friend, Ed White) Howey of Columbus, Ohio; Steve (Mary) Menchhofer of Rockbridge, Ohio; by a granddaughter, Suzanne Menchhofer of Bend, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Beatrice Nolte; Kathryn Knapp; Helen Suchland; by two brothers: Herbert Menchhofer and Cletus Menchhofer. 

Martin was a 1938 graduate of the Washingtown Twp. High School in Mercer County, Ohio. He was a long-time farmer in Mercer County and was an agent for the Bruns, Gant and Toms Insurance Agency in Celina. He also sold Thrifty Brand Feed in Rockford, Ohio.

Later in life, Martin and Marge lived in Fort Wayne, Indiana for a number of years before returning to their roots. His favorite pasttimes included playing cards, especially sheephead and euchre, and following the Cincinnati Reds.

He was a member of the Wayne Street United Methodist Church in Saint Marys.

A celebration of Martin’s life will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at the Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, Saint Marys, the Reverend Jon Kraner, officiant. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens.

Friends may call from 11:00 A.M. until the time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home, where memorial donations may be directed to the Wayne Street United Methodist Church.
