Harold C. McDermott, 92, formerly of 177 Buckeye Court, Westerville, OH and also formerly of Sidney, OH, died 1:30 P.M. Tuesday, February 19, 2008, at Otterbein Retirement Community, Saint Marys, OH, where he had lived since 1997. 

He was born June 14, 1915, in Clinton County, OH, the son of Robert and Vadah (Hodgson) McDermott. 

He married Edith Wright on June 17, 1939; she preceded him in death on September 9, 2000. 

He is survived by:

¨ Son, Roger (Patricia) McDermott of Vonore, TN

¨ Daughter, Kathleen (Scott) Adie of Cuyahoga Falls, OH

¨ Son,  Gregory (Jacqueline) McDermott of Fairlawn, OH

¨ Daughter-in-law, Suzanne McDermott of London, TN

¨ Numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren

¨ Sister, Margene (Robert) Herman of Wapakoneta, OH

¨ Sister, Mary Louise Johnston of Findlay, OH 

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a son, Gordon McDermott; a brother, Fred McDermott and a sister, Polly Easter.  

Harold was a graduate of Wilmington High School and the University of Cincinnati, OH. He had a long career in education having served as a science teacher and assistant principal for the Martinsville, OH schools; as a biology and chemistry teacher for the Sidney Public Schools from 1943-1964; and as Superintendent of Schools of the Westerville, OH Public Schools from 1964-1973. He later worked as a consultant to Freytag Architects in Sidney, OH, working on school building projects. 

Harold was a career-long member of Kiwanis International, having served in Sidney and Westerville. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Celina, OH.

Funeral rites will be will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 23, 2008, in the Meyer Community Chapel on the campus of Otterbein Saint Marys Retirement Community, 11300 State Route 364, St.Marys, OH, the Reverend Robert Matheny officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery, Sidney, OH.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, St.Marys, OH, where memorial donations may be directed to Otterbein St.Marys Retirement Community or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
