Eloise H. Horner

Eloise H. Horner, 95, of 220 North Front Street, Saint Marys, Ohio, and formerly of Ravenna, Ohio, died Monday, November 24, 2008, at her residence.

She was born May 27, 1913, in Ravenna, Ohio, the daughter of William and Mabel (Dewey) Marks.

Mrs. Horner, through her mother, was a direct descendant of Stephen Myers, Jr. the first settler of Streesboro Township in 1822. She was also a descendant of the Dewey family who migrated to Massachusetts in 1631, a part of the “Great Puritan Migration”. The Dewey family subsequently moved south along the Connecticut River Valley and were the founding family of the State of Connecticut.

She married Walter Seigle Horner on December 9, 1932; he preceded her in death in April of 1983.

She is survived by the two children: Dixie Horner Ullman of Dayton, Ohio; Walter Seigle Horner, Jr. of Saint Marys, Ohio; by two grandchildren: Kyle Ullman of Indianapolis; Kim Ullman of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; by a sister-in-law, Louise Marks of Ravenna; A brother-in-law, Webster Horner of Seville, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by her three brothers: Harry, Glenn and Kenneth Marks; by her two sisters: Ruth Marks Postlethwaite and Ona Piotrowski.

Mrs. Horner graduated from Ravenna Township High School in 1931. She attended Kent State Normal College. She had worked at the woolen mill in Ravenna and also at Black and Decker; she had served as cashier at Shalersville Elementary School for many years.

Mrs. Horner was elected Shalersville Township Trustee; was a former member of the Shalersville United Methodist Church, where she served as benevolence Treasurer; she had served as a delegate at the United Methodist Church Conference at Lakeside; she was an avid reader and was a member of the Shalersville Booster Club.

Funeral rites will be held 2:00 P.M. Monday, December 1, 2008, at Short’s Funeral Home, 141 North Meridian Street in Ravenna, the Reverend Vernon White, officiant. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery near Shalersville.

Friends may call from 2-4 P.M. Friday, November 28, 2008, at the Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, Saint Marys, Ohio. Friends may also call one hour prior to the funeral service at Short’s in Ravenna. Memorial donations may be directed to a charity of the donor’s choice.
