Harold “Lefty” Hertenstein, 82, of 17222, County Road 66-A, Saint Marys, Ohio, died 11:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born August 20, 1926, in Noble Township, Saint Marys, the son of Daniel and Maude (Kilger) Hertenstein.
He married Mary Chivington on November 9, 1947; she survives at the residence.
He is also survived by his five children: Craig (Katie) Hertenstein of Saint Marys; Kristina (John) Yancik of West Alexandria, Ohio; Jeffrey (Linell) Hertenstein of Saint Marys; Jodi Hertenstein of Saint Marys; Douglas (Rachel) Hertenstein of Saint Marys; by eleven grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by one sister, Joan Knatz.
Lefty was a 1944 graduate of Saint Marys Memorial High School. He was the owner/operator of the Kossuth Feed Mill for 31 years and was a lifelong farmer. He dearly loved the game of baseball and played in the men’s league for many years; he coached generations of baseball players in this area and he was the caretaker of the baseball diamonds at K.C. Geiger Park in Saint Marys. He also enjoyed hunting and being with his children and grandchildren. He attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Saint Marys and was also a member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church.
Funeral rites for Lefty will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, November 3, 2008, at the First Church of the Nazarene, the Reverend Tim Smith and the Reverend Don Ricard, officiants. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call from 1:00-6:00 P.M. Sunday at the Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home, 314 West High Street, Saint Marys, where memorial donations may be directed to either Grand Lake Hospice or the KC Geiger Park Improvement Fund.
