Donald L. Engel, 84, of 650 Webb Street, Saint Marys, died 1:37 P.M. Sunday, December 5, 2010, at Saint Ritas Medical Center after a short battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
He was born May 5, 1926, in Saint Marys, the son of Alvin and Novella (Lipp) Engel.
He married Sylvia Haeseker on October 8, 1947 and she survives at the residence.
He is survived by his two children: Randolph (Jill) Engel of Celina; Adele Fast (Gerald Freewalt) of Saint Marys; by two grandsons: Dr. Trenton (Bridget) Engel of Denver, Colo; Eric Fast of Orlando, Fla; by three step-grandchildren: Kyle Menchhofer of Celina; Kami Wilson of North Carolina; Ann Li of Celina; by two great-grandchildren: Sophie and Alexis Engel; by a sister-in-law, Shirley Engel of Wapakoneta.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by one brother, Eugene Engel; by a grandson, Mitchell Fast.
Don was a 1944 graduate of Saint Marys Memorial High School. He retired as Assistant Fire Chief of the City of Saint Marys Fire Department, following 27 years of service. He also was the owner of Don Mower Shop for many years in Saint Marys. In later years he drove a truck for Saint Marys Trucking Company. He was a member of Mercer Lodge #121, Free and Accepted Masons in Saint Marys; was a 32nd degree Master Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite Shrine, Valley of Dayton. He was a member of the Aug-Mer Shrine Club; Eagles 767; Police and Fire Retirees; West Ohio Fish and Game Club, where he was an avid trapshooter. He was a member of Saint Paul’s United Church of Christ in Saint Marys.
Funeral rites will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 9, 2010, at the Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home, 314 West High Street, Saint Marys, the Reverend Dr. Ed Bray, officiant. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4-8 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home, where Mercer Lodge #121 will conduct memorial rites. Donations may be directed to Saint Paul’s United Church of Christ
