Elbert L. Baird, of 11309 Bobwhite Lane In St. Marys, OH died 12:39 p.m. Wednesday November 16, 2011 at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, OH.

He was born January 25, 1923 in Old Washington, OH to Charles M and Vera A. (Boyd) Baird.

He is survived by:

step-son, James J. Hammann  of Iowa Falls, IA

step-son, Joseph P. Hammann  of Tipp City, OH

nephew,Charles (JoAnn) Baird  of Old Washington, OH

nephew, Mervin (Barbara) Baird  of Old Washington, OH

numerous great-nephews and great-nieces

He was preceded in death by his parents Charles & Vera Baird; wife, Dorcas (Woolley) Baird; wife, Marjorie (Potter) Hammann-Baird; brother and sister-in-law, Wayne & Elizabeth Baird.

1941 graduate of Old Washington High School.  He was a veteran of the US Army.  He spent his entire career working in the lumber industry. First with a lumber yard in Quaker City, OH from   1948-1952; then Hoge Lumber in New Knoxville, OH from 1952-1964; and final, Anna Lumber Co. in Anna, OH,  where he retired as manager.

He was a member of New Knoxville United Methodist Church.

He served as a scout master for Boy Scouts of America for many years.

He was a very active resident/ volunteer at Otterbein – St. Marys. A master woodworker, he was instrumental in the completion of numerous projects at the campus. He was also proud to have restored a 1963 Pontiac Catalina.

Funeral rites are scheduled 10:15 a.m. Monday November 21, 2011 at Meyer Community Chapel of Otterbein – St. Marys, with the Rev. Dennis Gaertner, officiating. Burial will follow at the Arcadia Cemetery in Arcadia, OH.

Visitation 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. Monday at Otterbein.  Memorial contributions may be directed to Otterbein benevolent fund.

Arrangements are entrusted to Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys, OH.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the professional staff at Otterbein-SM, JTDM Hospital, St. Rita’s Medical Center and St. Rita’s Hospice for the wonderful care given to Elbert during his illness.
